The NCS Sr Girls made history when they were the first volleyball team in the school’s history to make it to the provincial championships! The team travelled to Fernie, BC to participate in the 3 day tournament that lasted from 29 November to 1 December 2017.
Going into the tournament the girls were ranked #7 and were placed in a pool with Vernon Christian, Credo Christian, and the home team, Fernie Secondary. After pool play, the girls went into the playoff round still ranked #7. They beat Credo and Vernon, but had lost to Fernie.
The first round of playoffs saw the NCS girls take on Aberdeen Hall, which was a best of 5 set, that NCS won in four sets: 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23. This then put them in the quarter finals where they met Unity, who went on to become provincial champions, and lost in three hard fought sets: 20-25, 20-25 and 17-25.
The third game of playoffs was again against Credo in a best of 3 match. This time NCS lost: 25-22, 25-27, 9-15.
In the final game of the tournament, with a large home crowd present, the NCS girls met Fernie Secondary again. Although they had lost the first time, the NCS girls pulled of a 25-16 and 25-14 win to remain in 7th place overall for the tournament and the province.
Kaitlyn Vanderkooi, the NCS team captain for 2017, was named to the tournament all-star team.
Next Year 2018
This year none of the NCS players will be graduating, so we expect to see the same squad out next year, when we HOST PROVINCIALS 2018, in our new gym, from 30 November to 2 December. Another first for NCS!
