New Head of School Mike Campbell shares observations on his first month

Read about God at work in students' lives and other things Mr. Campbell is excited about for this school year.

With a month of student time under my belt, I am thrilled to be in this position at Nanaimo Christian School. I am so grateful to get to know these unique and wonderful children as they discover profound belonging and the big plans God has for them. These first little encounters of driving the bus with kindergarten, seeing a special hockey stick, and filling water bottles together will morph into shaking their hands at graduation before we blink. Every step along the way is unforgettable.

This month I engaged high school student council members to see if they could bring ideas for a Bible verse that could go up on our gym wall to dedicate our gym to the glory of God. This was a school board strategic initiative, knowing that as many as 1000 students from other schools may enter our gym each year and wanting to be a light on the hill for the city of Nanaimo. Our board's heart was an opportunity to proclaim Jesus in this community space. The students spent two weeks praying about verses and submitted eight options. Our school board then read out each verse and landed on this one:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” -- Joshua 1:9

In the coming months watch for it to be displayed on our gym wall.

I am grateful to be called to Nanaimo and for God to use me in Christian education. I love that in my first few weeks I have been blessed by seeing 24 high school students deeply engage in the scriptures, discerning what could be proclaimed on our walls for the greater community to see. I love that I work alongside a school board that is deeply committed to the mission and vision of the school, seeking ways to further share His story with our students, who can then share His story with others.

Lord willing, I am just beginning my journey at Nanaimo Christian. This board/student work makes me excited to serve at such a time as this, in a Christ-centred and excellent place that equips students to live Biblically, act responsibly, work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and achieve success in who God has called each of our students (and our staff, board, and parents) to be.
