Honouring Our Heritage: Legacy Lunch at NCS

The first of its kind at NCS, Legacy Lunch was both a celebration and a chance to capture the wisdom and memories of those who have been instrumental in building our school community.

In January NCS held a special gathering to celebrate some of the people, stories, and faithfulness that have shaped our school over the years. Legacy Lunch brought together current and former board members, school leaders, former staff, and community contributors to reflect on the journey that has brought NCS to where it is today. The first of its kind at NCS, the event was both a celebration and a chance to capture the wisdom and memories of those who have been instrumental in building our school community.

A Vision Rooted in Faith and History

Envisioned by Dawna Ferris, Director of Admissions and long time NCS staff member, the Legacy Lunch was designed to honor God’s faithfulness and showcase the school’s milestones, challenges, and accomplishments. Guests shared stories of moments when God provided in unexpected ways, celebrated the achievements of the school, and offered words of encouragement for the next generation of NCS leaders.

One attendee reflected on a defining moment for NCS:

“During the recession of 2008/09, ‘God things’ seemed impossible. It seemed impossible that we could have as many families stepping up to pay the tuition, which was a sacrifice at that time, and also the high school building. That was just an incredible provision by God. We prayed, believed that was what we were supposed to do, and God met all of our needs.”  - Bruce Mede

Tables featured photos from previous years, allowing attendees to take a stroll down memory lane. Remembrance stones invited participants to write a God moment they experienced at NCS, which will be placed around campus for the broader community to see and reflect upon. A video booth captured short testimonies from attendees to preserve these memories for years to come. You can watch these inspiring videos below.

Students at the Heart of the Event

Students played a meaningful role in bringing the Legacy Lunch to life:

  • Culinary classes prepared soups, salads, and sandwiches, complemented by parent-made focaccia, cookies, and squares.

  • High school service team members served guests at the tables.

  • A musical performance from elementary students added a lively and joyful atmosphere.

  • Student council created a slideshow highlighting eras of NCS history.

Sharing Stories and Building Community

A central part of the Legacy Lunch was story time at each table, where attendees engaged in short conversations guided by thoughtful prompts. Table hosts recorded these conversations for the school archives, and one story from each table was shared with the entire group, creating a tapestry of memories and experiences that capture the heart and history of NCS. These shared stories not only preserved personal memories but also highlighted the broader impact of NCS on the community over the years. As one attendee reflected on the early days of the school:

"The school when it started helped create unity among Christians in the city. It wasn’t about winning anybody over, but when they all started dropping their kids off and meeting the other parents … it’s quite a Christian community, really. Now we all have friends in churches different from the one we were attending on Sunday mornings." - Bob Wall

The Legacy Lunch was more than just a gathering—it was a celebration of God’s faithfulness, a testament to the dedication of our community, and a living record of the history that continues to inspire NCS for generations to come. By capturing these stories, reflections, and testimonies on video, we are ensuring that future students and families can see and hear firsthand how God has worked through our community. We look forward to making the Legacy Lunch an annual tradition, growing in connection, gratitude, and inspiration each year.
